The Game Review Thread

Since I love to play games I do not only play multiplayer games online, I also like to play "ordinary" games with a story in them. So in this thread I was thinking you could write a review about a game you've played, what you thought about it, why you recommend it or not, what could have been done better etc. I hope you write a bit longer than for example in the "last movie you saw was..." thread and go a bit deeper and talk about the details (it's up to you ofc :)), however feel free to use the same ranking system as Kickfoot posted :P. I'll start off with a review and I hope you will contribute too so I can get some recommendations of games I should play. I know there are tons of reviews online but I have a hard time to believe them due to their ability to look of things in special perspectives, after all reviewing games is sometimes their job which maybe takes a bit of the fun about it. That's why I would like to hear your oppinions which I value as a much better source than full time working game reviewers.

Call of Juarez (PC)

I bought this game with some other pc games for a low price, some of them pure classics which I will hopefully review in the future. Anyway I started playing this game on Thursday last week and I finished the game just a couple of minutes ago so it didn't take that much time to beat it on medium since I didn't play it that often each of the days.

Now to the game, the story takes place in Texas, during the time of the wild west, in other words somewhere around 1850-1900 which creates a very different enviroment compared to other FPS games I've played. The weaponry is in my favor too, a range of different revolvers can be equipped but also rifles, shotguns and my favourite weapon in the game which is the bow and arrow. These are weapons that are used frequently, you will equip special weapons too for certain missions. Since you play as two characters in the game you can't equip the bow for example when you play as one of the characters but thats very logic but I will come to that later. Your way of transportation is most often by foot but sometimes you ride by horse.

Now to the characters you play as, the first character is Billy who has indian roots and therfor he's good with the bow and has some some specialities when he uses it. He also is skilled with the wip but it's more used as a tool nor as a weapon. Instead it's used for climping and swinging over things which made the movement in the game good.

The second character is the priest Ray who decides to pick up his old revolvers and stop preaching and hunt down Billy who is accused for killing his mother and stepfather. He has not the same skills with the bow or the whip and neither the same movement skills as Billy so he never equip bow or whip and he can't climb, this due to his age and lack of indian blood in his veins. Instead he's very good with revolvers and has an ability to make a quick draw, which gives you the chance to shoot faster than the enemy. With ray you also come to duel with enemies in form of a classic wild west quick draw duel which is a nice touch to the game.

The gameplay is good because of the weaponry and the ability to cary up to four weapons. The ability to have a revolver or a sawed off shotgun in each hand is wonderful and you can fire them both in any order you like. Some weapons are a bit too overpowered though. The shotgun has a too long range and both the classic rifle and the bow damage too good, this may be changed if you play on hard but they are too good for play on medium.

The graphics are pretty good although the game is six years old by now, I played on highest quality available which resulted in smooth well detailed graphics. There were some graphical bugs, for example when you cary things they can move through a solid object but otherwise the graphics held a good quality.

The game was actually pretty bug free overall but the the downsides of the game was certain restrictions. For example in a mission you could kill rattlesnakes with your whip but when an eagle attacked you it was impossible to hurt it with the whip even though the hits were perfect. Another restriction that got me angry was that when you tried to pass two enemies who blocked the way they hit you with their revolvers and fists. You can select you hands as weapon which I did and when I punched the enemies they where not hit nor injured. There is one thing in the end of the game that was ridiculous but I'm not sure about telling it since I might ruin the game experience if someone here would like to play the game.

To sum up everything I must say it's a good game, although it's way to easy, I played on medium and never really had a hard time during the game due to the overpowered weapons and the abuncance of health restoring tequila. There is also settings for both easy and hard but I will probably not play it on hard because of the restriction in the end i mentioned. The story is also a bit too short which makes the game too small and too short but still it's one of the better games I've played and if I used Kickfoot's ranking system this game would get a 4! With the downsides fixed it could easily become a 5.

If everyone here thinks it's okay that I tell you the restriction in the end I mentioned I will present it. :)

This is all for now, I have more games that needs a review but I hoped you liked this one!
